The Alternative To Learning, Then Forgetting Game

"Learn game, develop proficiency, and then forget game."

Being excellent at anything, however, requires constant tweaking and experimentation.

As much as we are a destination-obsessed society, there is no actual finish line for any skill.

You should ALWAYS be consciously evolving.

I like the proverb that says "veggies and fruits exist in 3 stages: green, ripe, and rotten. Ripeness is what most people would deem as your pinnacle, peak, and prime. But notice, ripeness is very close to rottenness. Once you are "on top" of your game, the only direction available is down. The only choice, then, is to stay green. Beginner's mind. Stay hungry, stay learning, stay improving."

A second story that illustrates this point is the boxing trainer struggling to motivate his fighter. His fighter won a world title, only to lose it next fight. He became motivated enough to get back into contention and win again, then losing his title for the second time. His trainer, frustrated but recognizing an emerging pattern, said this: "When you're fighting to get to a title, you're driven and focused, but after you win, the pressure of being champ unmanned you. Remember, when you put your title on the line, you are no longer the champion. You're just a contender. You have to earn your title, as a contender, over and over again in each fight."

If you aim to "set and forget" your game at it's "peak", not only will you never realize that peaks are subjective, and that there are always new levels to reach, but you will eventually backslide and get worse. If you're not getting stronger, you're getting weaker. If you're not become more capable, you're becoming less so. AUTOMATICALLY. This is nature's law. This is how life on planet Earth works.

Forget forgetting game. Stay green. Stay growing.
